For many, being at the Bahamas is the epitome of what it is to be in a tropical paradise. That is why thousands of Americans visit this group of islands annually to enjoy the sun and its beaches. And it’s no wonder that you are planning to go on vacation there as well. Since it was initiated on July 14, 2008, you can now visit the Bahamas using your US passport card. The good thing about this is that this option is a lot cheaper and more convenient to use when traveling to the Bahamas than using the regular passport book. However, keep in mind that processing times for this type of card is similar to the regular passport, so make sure you apply for one early if you need to travel soon. Current routine passport processing takes four to six weeks, while an expedited passport takes only two to three weeks to process.

If you’re after flexibility, however, get yourself a pass port book. Unlike the passport card, which you can only use in WHTI areas, you can use your passport book for any destination practically anywhere in the world. It is a little pricier than the card counterpart, but makes up for it with its wide range of uses. If you’re a backpacker or a frequent traveler, the passport book is the option for you.

The reason we’re saying this is that the passport card is somewhat limited in its travel use. You can only use the passport card when you’re traveling to WHTI destinations either by sea or by land. But don’t worry, as you can apply for both types of passports in order to have the best of both worlds: the convenience and affordability of passport cards, and the flexibility of passport books. What’s more, you can get a huge discount if you apply for both types of passports.

While your US passport would generally suffice for WHTI destinations, the Bahamas may also require additional documents when traveling to their territory. Because of that, it is best if you check with their US-based Embassy first about the exact travel documents required. Make sure you do this check well before you leave.

It is recommended you register with the nearest US Embassy or consulate as soon as you arrive at the Bahamas. This is important as registering makes it easy for the Embassy or consulate to assist you in times of emergency. Aside from that, they will also provide you with travel and safety information when you visit their offices. This helps ensure that your travel will be safe and hassle-free.
